Roles & Expectations
EduDrift judges are not only expected to possess an exceptional understanding of debate but also to excel in facilitating and maintaining the integrity of each event. Their responsibilities include:
- Chairing the Room: Judges are responsible for effectively facilitating the debate. This includes welcoming speakers, clearly explaining and enforcing the debate format, and maintaining order and discipline throughout the proceedings. Their role is crucial in setting the tone for the competition and ensuring that all participants adhere to the established guidelines.
- Authority to Act: Our judges possess the necessary experience and authority to manage the debate environment actively. This includes the capability to remove disruptive participants if needed, thereby preserving a conducive atmosphere for constructive debate.
- Adaptability: In the event of technical difficulties, such as a speaker being disconnected, judges are expected to handle the situation with tact and consideration. Their ability to pause and resume the debate as needed is essential for maintaining fairness and continuity in the competition.
- Technical Proficiency: Judges must ensure that all technical requirements are met before and during the debate. This involves verifying the functionality of cameras, the stability of Wi-Fi connections, and the proper operation of audio equipment, which are vital for the smooth conduct of a virtual debate.
- Delivering Verdicts and Oral Adjucation: At the conclusion of each debate round, judges provide clear, well-reasoned verdicts, assessing each speaker’s argumentative effectiveness, clarity, and adherence to debate rules.
Ethical and Professional Standards
To ensure the highest standards of integrity and professionalism, EduDrift sets rigorous criteria for selecting judges:
- Person of Good Standing: Judges must consistently demonstrate a strong moral character and a commitment to ethical behavior both in and out of the debating arena. This includes adhering to principles of integrity, morality, and respect in all interactions.
- Background Verification: All potential judges undergo comprehensive background checks facilitated through Checkr. This step is crucial to ascertain their credibility and ethical standing, confirming that they meet our high standards for integrity.
- Record of Conduct: Candidates must have no criminal records. They are thoroughly vetted to ensure there is no history of misconduct, abuse, or any inappropriate actions. This scrutiny is essential to maintain a safe and respectful environment for all participants.
These standards are not just formalities but are integral to preserving the educational and ethical framework of EduDrift debates, reinforcing our commitment to providing a fair, unbiased, and enriching competitive experience.
