Day 01

08:00-08:30 Welcome ceremony

08:30-09:00 An introduction to debating

In this session, Dominic Guinane will talk about how to effectively navigate the debating landscape. He will cover:

• A brief history of debate
• The fundamentals of debate
• Common misconceptions about debate
• The major debating circuits

09:00-09:30 Developing soft skills through debate

In this session, Leah Mercier will talk about the soft skill demands of higher education and how these requirements can be achieved through debate and public speaking. She will share her perspectives on:

• International exposure opportunities for debaters
• College tracks and career paths for debaters

09:30-10:30 Debate crash course

In this section, Sourodip Paul will cover fundamental topics required in a debating curriculum and introduce the art of parliamentary debating. He will cover:

• Debate jargon and lingo
• Introduction to the Asian Parliamentary 3v3 debate format
• 3v3 Debate structure
• General rules
• Speaker roles

10:30-11:30 College admissions and varsity debating

In this session, Solbridge International School of Business will cover:

• What college boards look for in a college application
• Soft skill requirements for college admission
• How a debating CV makes college and scholarship applications more attractive

11:30-12:00 Break

12:00-13:00 Lunch Break

13:00-14:00 Critical thinking exercise

During this session, participants will be divided into breakout groups where they will be given the chance to discuss among themselves and learn fresh perspectives from their fellow delegates. They will also:

• Be given aptitude assessment tests
• Participate in an explosive public speaking drill

Participants will also be receiving feedback regarding their performance during the session.

14:00-15:00 The elements of an argument

In this session, Asif Mehedi will talk about the principles of argumentation and case building. He will cover:

• How to identify and utilize the components of an argument to establish a clear position
• How to support a position with evidence and explain how that evidence relates to the claim
how
• How to explain the impacts of an argument
• How to dissect and layer an argument
• What is case building and how build an impactful case

15:00-15:30 Break

15:30-17:00 Flourishing as a debater + focus group discussion

In this session, delegates will be assigned to small groups and given the chance to hear personal anecdotes and gain first-hand advice from internationally renowned debate specialists. They will be able to ask personal questions about debate and public speaking.

Participants will learn the nuances of what it takes to succeed and have a flourishing debate future.

To reinforce everything they have learned, participants will be given a project during this session.

17:00-18:30 Welcome socials

During this hour, participants will be given the chance to bond with fellow delegates through social activities and fun games. They will also be given the opportunity to further interact with their favorite specialists and solicit for advice.

Day 02

08:00-08:30 Morning briefing

08:30-09:30 Overcoming stage fight + focus group discussion

During this session, participants will be allocated to small groups where they will be able to intimately learn how to overcome stage fright. They will be able to voice out their fears, concerns, and anxieties about public speaking in a safe space and receive helpful advice from internationally decorated debate and public speaking specialists.

09:30-10:30 Speaking with clarity and style + impromptu speaking exercise

In this session, Ellie Stephenson will teach participants how to find their unique style of delivering a speech. She will share her perspectives on:

• The fundamental elements of a speech
• What makes a great speech
• How to find your own voice and style
• The science of quick thinking and impromptu speaking

After Ellie's lecture, participants will be given an impromptu speaking exercise.

10:30-11:30 Getting ready to study abroad

In this session, one of our university partners will talk about what to expect and prepare when studying abroad. Our university partner will cover:

• Study abroad programs and opportunities for debaters
• Finding the right program
• How to find home away from home
• Navigating your identity as an international student

11:30-12:00 Break

12:00-13:00 Lunch Break

13:00-14:00 Familiarity with current events and global affairs

In this session, Asif Mehedi will talk about the most pressing current affairs today and the importance of social awareness. He will cover topics on:

• Economy
• Politics and international relations
• Technology
• Environment
• Media and pop culture

After the lecture, participants will participate in an exercise that requires them to utilize their newfound knowledge on current affairs.

14:00-15:30 The art of persuasion + speaking exercise

In this session, Grace Zhang will talk about the art and importance of persuasion. She will cover:

• The elements of a persuasive speech
• Speaking with confidence

After the lecture, delegates will be assigned to breakout groups and play the bluffing game.

15:30-16:00 Break

16:00-17:00 The crowning of the Asian Champions

During this session, delegates will be able to watch the grand finals of the Asia Schools Open—the flagship Asian Parliamentary debating championship for pre-university students in Asia, Australia, and New Zealand—and witness the crowning of the new Asian Champions.

17:00-17:30 Closing ceremony
